Somme trip 2016

After months of planning and preparation we finally completed our first international trip.  At 19.00 on the 27th of October we set off in the minibus, making excellent (and unexpected) time on the motorway and arriving at Plymouth at around 01.00, hours ahead of our predicted time.  Tijs allowed us to board an earlier train and fit much more into our trip on the French side.  We visited many memorials, and saw many thousands of graves to the men who fell in the Great War, many of them never found and having no known grave.  We attended the moving service at Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.  Each of our Scouts had been given the name of a Middleton man who had died at the Somme and we found their names on the memorial walls and left poppy crosses and wreaths (kindly donated by the Middleton Branch of the Royal British Legion).
We were hosted by the amazing Scouts and Leaders of the Groupe Saint-Martins Amiens who provided us with a campsite, the use of their activity centre and treated us to local french food. They even took us to meet the Mayor of Amiens! We are keeping in touch with them and hope to plan further events together in future, both virtually online and maybe even meeting up again sometime.

Trek Cart

Many years ago, before cars were common, Scouts would use trek carts to transport their gear to camp.
A trek cart was designed to be taken to pieces so that if the Troop came up to a narrow opening or a gateway they could unload it, dismantle it, carry everything through the other side and then rebuild it and be on their way.
We have now finished renovating our old trek cart and it has already been used on several nights away events.
